If your Leeuwin-Naturaliste trip is only cliffs and cafés, you miss half the park’s character. Boranup’s karri trunks change the light, the temperature and the pace.
This is a scenic drive and short-lookout culture more than a single multi-hour trek — unless you choose signed longer walks that are open on your date. Either way, fire danger and road conditions are first-class citizens.
Verify road and lookout status on official sources before you go. This guide is unofficial practical planning, not live status.
Why the forest belongs on your itinerary

Boranup Karri Forest

Coastal heath and granite get the Instagram love. Karri forest gives height, shade, cooler air and a different South West story. Many multi-day visitors say this is when the trip stops feeling one-note.
You do not need to be a botanist. You need slow driving, signed stops, and willingness to cancel on fire-danger days.
How to use Boranup in a day plan
Best as an afternoon cool-down after a morning beach, or a weather alternative when capes are blasted by wind. Do not sandwich it between a rushed Cape Leeuwin tour and a cellar-door dinner without looking at the clock.
Classic central day: Prevelly / Redgate-style beach morning → Margaret River reset → Boranup Drive afternoon. See the central beaches & forest itinerary on this site.
If anyone is carsick on winding roads, shorten the loop and prioritise one lookout rather than “doing the whole drive.”
Driving and stop discipline
Stop only in signed areas. New pull-offs damage vegetation and create blind hazards on narrow forest roads.
Watch for wildlife, cyclists and oncoming traffic. Dawn and dusk are higher risk for animals on the road.
Short lookout walks: grip shoes even if “it is just a lookout.” Roots and wet boards after rain are real.
Fire danger honesty
Forest days are not automatic on severe fire danger days. Official alerts win over your itinerary PDF. Have a town, cave or beach alternative ready without treating the change as failure.
Never light fires outside legal, signed facilities and rules. Cigarette butts do not belong in karri country.
Camping nearby
Official campgrounds in the wider park (including Boranup area options when listed) must be booked via Park Stay WA / DBCA. Availability and rules change — verify live.
Commercial stays in Margaret River / Augusta are the affiliate-safe hotel product when you want a bed, not a campsite booking.
Failure modes
Treating Boranup as a 70 km/h photo drive-through → near-misses and no real experience. Fix: slow down, one signed stop done well.
Ignoring fire danger → closed roads and wasted day. Fix: check alerts the night before and morning of.
Forcing Leeuwin + full forest + three cellar doors → everyone hates each other by 6 pm. Fix: pick forest + one other story.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Boranup Drive 2WD friendly?
Many visitors use standard 2WD when roads are open and dry, but conditions change. Check official advice and drive conservatively on narrow sections.
Can I do Boranup and Cape Leeuwin the same day?
Possible if you protect times and skip other ambitions — but a full forest loop plus a late lighthouse tour from a northern base is how people rush and arrive cranky. Prefer one clear southern or central story.
What about camping near Boranup?
Official campgrounds in the wider park (including Boranup-area options when listed) must be booked via Park Stay WA / DBCA. Never use affiliate stay modules for official camping products.
