Central day: beaches & Boranup forest
Best for: Mixing sand time with karri forest contrast
Guide updated · verify Explore Parks WA the morning you go
Prevelly / Redgate-style beach block plus Boranup forest drive — a balanced central-ridge day that does not force both capes.

Base in Margaret River or Prevelly and accept that you cannot also “do” Cape Leeuwin properly the same day without rushing. This plan protects one beach story and one forest story.
Summer fire danger can close or restrict forest areas — verify official alerts before committing to Boranup. Have a cave or town Plan B ready.
Rips are real on this coast. Swimming is a separate decision from “we made it to the sand.” Never swim alone; match conditions to ability.
Always re-check Explore Parks WA the morning you go. This is planning guidance, not live status.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Weather + fire gate
Check coastal forecast, fire danger and park alerts. If forest restrictions look likely, pre-name Plan B (second beach, cave ticket if available, or town). Pack sun protection, water, microfibre towel, insect repellent. Agree: beach morning, forest afternoon — not both ends of the park.
Morning
Beach block
Prevelly / Gnarabup or another signed coastal day-use area. Arrive earlier on peak surf/holiday days. Swim only if conditions and skills match. Keep kids in honest supervision range. If the beach is blown out, switch to a shorter foreshore walk and move the forest block earlier.
Midday
Town or picnic reset
Fuel, water, toilets, food in Margaret River if needed. Download offline maps for forest roads while you have signal. Check how tired feet actually are before promising a long forest loop.
Afternoon
Boranup Drive & lookout
Scenic forest drive with signed stops only. Cooler shade option on hot days. Drive slowly; leave room for oncoming traffic and wildlife. Short lookout walk if open; return the same way if unsure of loops. Do not invent pull-offs.
Late afternoon
Hard stop / soft evening
Back to base before people are wrecked. Optional short cellar-door or town dinner only if energy remains — not a third major outdoor product. Re-check tomorrow’s alerts if stacking a southern day.

Parking & access tips
- Beach car parks fill on peak surf and holiday days — arrive earlier.
- Forest pull-offs: only use signed areas; never block narrow roads.
- Leave valuables out of sight at beach and forest nodes.
- If beach parking is full, reverse order: forest first, beach later — or pick another signed beach.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Cape Leeuwin lighthouse tour the same day
- Full cave circuit the same afternoon after a long beach
- Northern cape icons “quickly” after Boranup
- Wine-strip marathon that burns the forest light window
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Visitors based in Margaret River / Prevelly / Gnarabup
- Groups who want more than pure lookout tourism
- Hot-day travellers who need a forest cool-down
- People willing to cancel forest plans on fire-danger days
Decision gates
- Severe fire danger → drop Boranup without argument
- Big swell / unsafe swim → foreshore walk only
- Carsick kids on winding roads → shorter forest loop, one lookout
- Energy gone after beach → town evening is still a win
Failure modes
- Treating Boranup as a five-minute drive-through photo stop at 70 km/h
- Forcing Cape Leeuwin after a full beach + forest program
- Swimming outside ability because the water “looks fine from the car”
