This is the southern climax day. If a lighthouse tower tour is the goal, that ticket window owns the schedule. Hamelin Bay is the flexible beach variable around it.
From Margaret River, driving time is real — do not treat Cape Leeuwin as a quick add-on after a long wine lunch. From Augusta, protect tour check-in buffer and wind layers.
Tower access is typically paid and timed. Book before you promise kids. If tours are full or closed, headland views + Hamelin still make a full southern day.
Verify alerts and a coastal forecast the morning you leave. Planning guidance only.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Lock the tour window
Confirm lighthouse tour tickets and check-in time if climbing. Pack wind shell, warm mid-layer, sun hat with strap, water. Agree order: beach-first if tour is late; lighthouse-first if tour is morning-only. Screenshot directions offline.
Morning flexible
Hamelin Bay (or reverse)
Beach time if the lighthouse tour is later. Swim only when conditions and skills match; give wildlife space. Peak holidays: arrive earlier for parking. If tour is morning, reverse — lighthouse first, beach after.
Booked slot
Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse
Arrive early for parking and check-in. Layers on before the headland. Walk formed public areas even if not climbing. Stay behind barriers; hold hats and children in wind. If tours are full/closed, reframe: headland views still count.
Afternoon
Augusta reset
Warm drink, fuel, optional short coastal stroll only if energy remains. Protect return drive light if basing north in Margaret River. Do not invent a northern cape “quick look” on the way home.
Evening
Hard stop
Southern days run long when people keep adding stops. A calm Augusta or MR dinner after one lighthouse story is the win condition.

Parking & access tips
- Protect lighthouse arrival buffer on tour days — late often means missed climb.
- Hamelin Bay peak holidays: arrive earlier or accept a shorter later visit.
- Do not leave valuables visible at either node.
- From Margaret River, treat drive time as a real block in the schedule, not a footnote.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Boranup full loop the same day after a late Leeuwin tour
- Northern cape drive-through “for completeness”
- Long Cape to Cape section after tower stairs
- Wine marathon en route without a protected tour window
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Visitors who want the southern full-stop story
- Groups with (or without) tower tour tickets
- Augusta-based stays or dedicated southern days from MR
- People willing to reframe if the tower is closed
Decision gates
- Extreme wind → shorter outdoor headland time, more Augusta buffer
- Tour sold out → headland + Hamelin still succeeds
- Unsafe swim → foreshore only at Hamelin
- Running late for check-in → skip beach; protect the ticket
Failure modes
- Promising both lighthouses in one day from Perth
- Under-packing layers and cutting the visit short in wind
- Treating Cape Leeuwin as a five-minute photo stop after Boranup
