Hamelin as a southern pause
Hamelin Bay is a favourite reset between Boranup forest and Cape Leeuwin: sand, water and a chance to slow the day. Peak holidays bring crowds and parking pressure — success is still a good swim window or foreshore walk, not solitude on every visit.
If you are continuing to the lighthouse, protect driving and tour-ticket timing. Hamelin is the flexible variable; tower tickets are the rigid one.
Tenure and facilities can mix park, reserve and private operator areas. Follow on-site signage and official maps rather than assuming every facility is “inside” the same management system.
Always re-check Explore Parks WA for live access, track status and alerts before you rely on any planning note on this page.
Water safety and wildlife respect
Clear water photographs beautifully and still hides rips, cold patches and changing conditions. Swim only within your skill. Supervise children closely. Never treat marine wildlife as a petting zoo.
When stingrays or other wildlife are present near popular zones, give space. Do not feed. A respectful distance keeps both people and animals safer.
Private holiday park vs DBCA camping
Hamelin Bay Holiday Park is privately operated. It is not a DBCA campground and is not booked through Park Stay WA as park camping. Label it correctly in your group chat so nobody expects official park camping rules or affiliate stay modules to cover it.
Official DBCA campgrounds elsewhere on the ridge remain Park Stay WA only. This site never affiliates those bookings.
Pairing with Cape Leeuwin and Boranup
Classic southern day: Hamelin flexible block + protected Cape Leeuwin window + Augusta reset. Classic multi-day: Boranup one afternoon, Hamelin + lighthouse the next.
Do not add a full northern cape drive after a long Hamelin beach day unless the group is still sharp — fatigue on Caves Road is a real risk.

FAQ — Hamelin Bay
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Hamelin Bay inside the national park?
Hamelin Bay is a key visitor node on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste coast experience; facilities and tenure can mix park, reserve and private operator areas. Use official maps and signage on the day.
Can I camp at Hamelin Bay with Park Stay WA?
Hamelin Bay Holiday Park is privately operated, not a DBCA campground. Official park campgrounds book via Park Stay WA only — verify which sites apply for your dates on official systems.
Is it safe to swim?
Conditions change. Clear water is not a guarantee of gentle swimming. Assess rips, weather and your skill; supervise children; follow any local warnings.
How long before Cape Leeuwin?
Build real buffer for parking, beach time and the drive. If a lighthouse tour is booked, Hamelin becomes the flexible block — not the other way around.
