Central ridge access: Prevelly / Gnarabup beaches, Redgate and Conto-area links, plus the practical hub town of Margaret River for fuel, food and multi-day bases that can reach both ends of the park.
- Best for: Beach days, surf culture vibe, multi-day central base, pairing park time with town services
- Time: Full day for beaches + one park node; multi-day base for the whole ridge
- Margaret River town is the main central services hub; Prevelly / Gnarabup sit west toward the beaches via local roads off the Caves Road / Bussell Highway network.

Why Margaret River works as a base
If you want one overnight town that can reach northern icons, Boranup forest and southern Cape Leeuwin without relocating every night, Margaret River is the practical compromise. You trade pure beach-front mornings for services, restaurants and a denser road network.
Prevelly / Gnarabup suit people who prioritise sand and surf over wine-strip walking distance. Many multi-day visitors mix both: beach-first nights when the forecast is good, town nights for recovery and resupply.
From Perth, treat Margaret River as a late-afternoon arrival base rather than a same-day full ridge tour. Unpack, check alerts, and run a proper morning plan the next day.
Always re-check Explore Parks WA for live access, track status and alerts before you rely on any planning note on this page.
Beaches and coastal day-use realism
Central beaches are a core Leeuwin-Naturaliste experience — and they still carry rips, cold water, and changing surf. Swim only within your skill. Local conditions matter more than a postcard memory of “clear water.”
Peak holidays fill beach car parks. Arrive earlier, take only what you need from the car, and keep valuables out of sight. If parking is full, another signed day-use node often exists within a short drive — or accept a forest afternoon instead.
Park time vs region time
The Margaret River region is famous for wine and food. That is a feature — and a distraction. Protect at least one solid park block (beach, lookout, short walk or forest drive) before stacking cellar doors, or you will leave having “done the region” without meeting the national park.
Caves are excellent weather Plan Bs when tickets and hours work. They are also separate paid products — verify operators and do not assume walk-up entry in peak periods.
Official camping near the central ridge
Official DBCA campgrounds associated with the broader park experience (commonly including Conto and other named sites — VERIFY the live list) book only through Park Stay WA. Fees, facilities and seasonal rules change.
This guide never affiliates official camping bookings. Hotel and apartment searches on gateway towns are a different product from park camping rights.
Cape to Cape day sections from the centre
Central access makes cherry-picked Cape to Cape day sections more realistic than end-to-end fantasies. Still: car shuffles, water, turnaround times and official maps come first. Sand and undulation tire groups faster than the kilometre number suggests.
If your group is new to coastal multi-hour walking, start with a short out-and-back from a known car park rather than a one-way section with two vehicles and no Plan B.

Practical tips
- Fill water and fuel in town before remote day-use nodes.
- Use Margaret River as a recovery night after Cape to Cape sections.
- Check fire danger and park alerts in summer before forest or ridge walks.
- Protect one park block before cellar doors if park experience is the priority.
- Download offline maps — signal is patchy on parts of the ridge.

FAQ — Margaret River coast
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Should I stay in Margaret River or on the coast?
Margaret River for services and central driving; Prevelly/Gnarabup for beach-first mornings; Yallingup/Dunsborough for northern icons; Augusta for Cape Leeuwin focus. Many trips mix bases over multiple nights.
Can I reach both lighthouses from Margaret River in one day?
Possible as a long driving day, but usually a poor experience. Protect one end of the ridge per day if you want walking time, not only car time.
Where do I book park camping?
Official DBCA campgrounds only via Park Stay WA / Explore Parks WA systems. Never through Booking.com modules on this site. Verify live site names, fees and rules before travel.
Is the wine region part of the national park?
No. Margaret River wine and food sits beside the park experience. Both can fit a trip, but they compete for the same daylight — plan deliberately.
