Where you start
Boranup Drive access (VERIFY current entry points)
Use official maps for Boranup Drive / lookout access off the Caves Road corridor. Road conditions, seasonal restrictions and lookout open status can change — confirm before you commit a convoy.
How to get there
- From Margaret River, head south toward Augusta via the Caves Road network and signed Boranup access. Allow real time — this is not a five-minute detour.
- Drive slowly; watch for wildlife, cyclists and oncoming traffic on narrow forest sections.
- Check fire danger and park alerts first in summer. Forest plans can be cancelled by official restrictions.
- Fuel and snacks in Margaret River or Augusta before long forest loops if you are low.
How to do it (step by step)
- Check fire danger and Explore Parks WA alerts first. If restrictions apply, swap to town/beach Plan B without drama.
- Stop only in signed areas; do not create new pull-offs that damage vegetation or block traffic.
- Short walk to lookout if open; return the same way if unsure of loops. Keep kids on formed paths.
- Photograph the light between trunks, then move — lingering in the middle of narrow roads is a hazard.
- Pair with Hamelin Bay or a cave only if times remain honest; do not force Cape Leeuwin as a five-minute add-on after a long forest loop.
What to expect
Boranup is the tall-forest counterweight to open coastal heath. Expect a scenic drive culture with optional short walks — not a continuous multi-hour trek unless you choose signed longer walks that are open.
Light under the karri canopy is different: cooler, greener, quieter. Many visitors say this is the day their trip stops being “only beaches.”
Best conditions
Hot coastal afternoons are a classic time to move inland for shade. Winter wet roads need slower driving; summer fire danger can cancel plans entirely.
After rain, lookouts can be slippery. Wear grip shoes even if “it is just a lookout.”
Fire danger honesty
Forest days are not automatic on catastrophic or severe fire danger days. Official alerts win over your itinerary PDF. Have a town, cave or beach alternative ready.
Never light fires outside legal, signed facilities and rules. Cigarette butts and campfire fantasies do not belong in karri country.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs: morning beach at Prevelly / Redgate corridor then forest afternoon; Hamelin Bay as a southern beach pause; caves as weather Plan B when booked.
Weak pairs: full Boranup loop + both lighthouses + three cellar doors. Pick forest + one other story.

Extra tips
- Excellent cooler-afternoon option in summer heat when capes are blasted by sun and wind.
- Overcast days still work — trunks and understorey hold interest without harsh glare.
- If anyone is carsick on winding roads, keep the drive shorter and prioritise one lookout stop.
- Official campgrounds nearby (when listed) book only via Park Stay WA / DBCA.
Often paired with Hamelin Bay— only if energy and weather allow.
