Canal Rocks coastal stop
Guide updated · Park conditions, track status, cave and lighthouse hours, camping availa…
Granite channels and surge views near Yallingup. Easy to reach, easy to underestimate ocean power.
Do not pair: Do not stack Canal Rocks immediately after a long Cape to Cape section or a late Sugarloaf scramble.
Turnaround: If spray is hitting upper formed paths or anyone starts climbing, leave while the day is still a win.
- Turning your back on the ocean on wet granite for “one better angle”.
- Third edge stop of the morning when kids are already climbing the rails.

- Easy access with hazardous rock edges
- 30–90 minutes

Where you start
Canal Rocks day-use area
Signed access from the Yallingup / Caves Road side network to the Canal Rocks car park. Start at the car park and use formed paths — the channels are the attraction, not a playground.
How to get there
- From Yallingup or Dunsborough, follow signs to Canal Rocks. Roads are short but peak traffic crawls.
- Do not block access roads when parking is full. Leave and return later or swap to a beach/café Plan B.
- Self-drive only for most visitors. Keep valuables off seats.
How to do it (step by step)
- Assess swell from a safe high vantage first. If waves are exploding through the channels, that is your risk briefing.
- Use formed paths; keep clear of wet platform edges in big seas. Never turn your back on the ocean on rock platforms.
- Limit time if the group starts climbing for photos — that is the cue to leave while the day is still a win.
- Combine with a calmer beach or town reset afterward rather than another edge stop immediately.
What to expect
Canal Rocks is a short coastal drama stop: granite channels, surge, spray and cameras. Distance is small; consequence of a bad decision is not.
It is not a swimming beach product. Treat it like a lookout with wet rock, not a boardwalk.
Reading the swell
If you need to shout over the ocean or feel spray on the upper paths, stay high. The best photos are often from safe formed ground with the channels as subject, not from the wet lip.
Never turn your back on the water on rock platforms. “I was only going to stand there for a second” is a known injury story on this coast.
Crowds & time of day
Peak holidays and fine weekends pack the small parking footprint. Arrive earlier, or accept a reverse order after Sugarloaf/Cape Naturaliste if lots are full.
If edges are crowded, take one good view and leave — congestion multiplies trip hazards.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs: Cape Naturaliste + Sugarloaf earlier; Yallingup beach or café recovery; soft afternoon in town.
Weak pairs: Canal Rocks as the third edge stop after already tired kids; scrambling for sunset after a long Cape to Cape section.

Extra tips
- Big swell days are spectacular and dangerous — choose higher formed viewpoints only.
- Great short stop between Cape Naturaliste and beach time — not a multi-hour destination unless you are deliberately shooting weather.
- Kids need close hands near edges; “just one more step for the photo” is the classic failure mode.
Often paired with Sugarloaf Rock— only if energy and weather allow.
