Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse & headland

Southern full-stop of the ridge: lighthouse precinct, wind-blasted ocean views and Cape to Cape storytelling. Tower access is typically paid and timed.

Do not pair: Do not pair with Cape Naturaliste tower + Sugarloaf + Canal Rocks on a same-day return from Perth.

Turnaround: If you will miss check-in, skip the beach and protect the ticket. If the tower is closed, reframe: headland + Hamelin still counts.

  • Walk-up peak-holiday disappointment when the tower is sold out and the day was sold as “the lighthouse”.
  • Treating Cape Leeuwin as a five-minute add-on after Boranup and a late lunch from Margaret River.

Official pages own live status. Confirm what the sign on the day says if it disagrees with an old blog.

  • Easy headland access; tower tours separate
  • 1–3 hours including tour buffer
  • Short paths around lighthouse precinct
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: Southern icon, lighthouse tours, Cape to Cape finish photos

Where you start

Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse precinct near Augusta

Drive to the signed lighthouse area. Headland walking is separate from any guided tower climb — confirm tour tickets if that is your main goal. This is a windy headland product, not a café courtyard.

How to get there

  1. From Augusta, follow signs to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. Short final approach; still allow tour check-in buffer.
  2. From Margaret River, allow real driving time plus stops — do not sandwich this as a five-minute add-on after a full forest day and a late lunch.
  3. Protect arrival buffer on booked tour days. Late = missed climb more often than “they will wait.”
  4. Self-drive is the norm. Peak holidays: arrive earlier for parking.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Arrive with tour time buffer if climbing the tower. Check-in, layers on, then walk.
  2. Walk formed public areas; respect closed zones and wind. Hold hats and children near edges.
  3. If tours are full/closed, still enjoy headland views and Augusta reset — reframe success.
  4. Optional: combine with Hamelin Bay earlier only if the lighthouse window is protected in the schedule.
  5. Do not invent a long Cape to Cape finish celebration walk after dark.

What to expect

Cape Leeuwin is the southern full stop of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste story: ocean on multiple bearings, lighthouse architecture, and the emotional “end of the Cape to Cape” for multi-day walkers.

It is windier than marketing photos. If you under-pack layers, you will cut the visit short and remember the cold more than the view.

Tower tour realism

Tower climbs are typically paid and timed. Book before you promise kids or first-timers. Walk-up peak-holiday disappointment is common.

If the tower is closed, the headland still delivers a full southern day when paired with Hamelin Bay or Augusta — do not declare the day ruined.

Best conditions

Clear days give the big ocean views; storm light is dramatic if you stay safe and short. Extreme wind days: shorter outdoor time, more indoor Augusta buffer.

From a Margaret River base, treat this as a dedicated southern day, not a quick loop after Boranup and three other stops.

What to pair (and what not to)

Strong pairs: Hamelin Bay beach pause; Augusta services; quiet-season multi-day southern focus.

Weak pairs: northern cape icons the same afternoon; long hard Cape to Cape section after a late tower tour; wine-strip marathon en route without a protected tour window.

Extra tips

  • Layers and a hat with a chin strap help in wind. Capes punish fashion-only headwear.
  • Mainland Australia’s tallest lighthouse setting is a photography magnet — still stay behind barriers.
  • Augusta is the natural reset: warm drink, fuel, quiet evening.
  • Doing both Naturaliste and Leeuwin well usually means two days or a very long drive day — not both after a wine lunch.

Often paired with Hamelin Bay— only if energy and weather allow.
