Where you start
Hamelin Bay day-use / foreshore parking
Signed access to Hamelin Bay beach and foreshore areas. Follow local signage for swimming and boat ramp zones. This is a real ocean beach, not a pool.
How to get there
- Drive south from Margaret River toward Augusta; follow Hamelin Bay signs. Allow time — southern distances are real.
- Peak holiday parking is competitive — arrive earlier or accept a shorter visit later in the day.
- Private holiday park facilities are separate from DBCA campgrounds; do not confuse commercial sites with Park Stay WA bookings.
How to do it (step by step)
- Check conditions before swimming. Rips and changing surf are real. Never swim alone; supervise kids honestly.
- Keep respectful distance from wildlife (including stingrays when present). No chasing for photos.
- Beach stroll as far as energy allows; turn around with daylight and weather margin.
- Leave time if continuing to Cape Leeuwin — protect lighthouse tour windows if booked.
- Pack out rubbish; use bins where provided. Sand and wind scatter lightweight waste fast.
What to expect
Hamelin Bay is a southern sand node: beach time, foreshore walks, and a natural pause on the way to or from Cape Leeuwin. Peak holidays feel busy; shoulder days feel spacious.
Clear-water reputation does not cancel ocean hazards. Treat swimming as a separate decision from “we made it to the sand.”
Wildlife respect
When stingrays or other marine life are present in shallows, give space and do not herd animals for photos. Wildlife is not a prop.
Teach kids the rule before toes hit water: look, do not chase, leave room to move.
Best conditions
Warm calm days are classic beach weather; windy winter days still work for short foreshore walks with shells and layers.
If Cape Leeuwin is booked for a morning tower tour, Hamelin can flex after. If the tour is afternoon, Hamelin morning works well with an early start.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs: Cape Leeuwin the same day; Augusta overnight; Boranup earlier only if times stay honest.
Weak pairs: full northern cape program plus Hamelin plus Leeuwin in one rushed day from Perth. Pick a southern story or a northern story.

Extra tips
- Shade and water are essential on sunny days. UV on sand is stronger than it feels in the car.
- Excellent flexible block around a Cape Leeuwin tour slot — beach first or after depending on tickets.
- If swimming is marginal, the foreshore walk and views still make a complete southern pause.
- Quieter midweek shoulder days beat peak January afternoons for space.
Often paired with Cape Leeuwin— only if energy and weather allow.
